Originally constructed in 1712 and later reimagined by the celebrated theatrical designer Oliver Messel, the property represents a rare convergence of architectural heritage, artistic legacy, and natural beauty.

Architectural Heritage

Messel’s influence remains central to the character of the estate. His hallmark design language; arched openings, soft green detailing, classic shutters, and an intuitive flow between indoor and outdoor spaces can be felt throughout the estate. Over time, the estate has expanded thoughtfully:

A Plantation Wing was added in 1999 through a collaboration between Ian Morrison and a Portuguese architect

The Pavilion Wing followed in 2003, designed by an English architect from the Cotswolds

More recent upgrades include discreet infrastructure improvements and a newly constructed internal road and parking area

The Residence

The main residence comprises seven en-suite bedrooms, comfortably accommodating up to fourteen guests, and is arranged across three distinct wings, allowing for flexibility, privacy, and multi-generational use.

The Main House contains the primary suite and an additional sea-facing suite, both positioned to capture elevated views and cooling trade winds.

The Plantation Wing offers a series of more secluded suites with direct garden access, alongside a games room suitable for relaxed gatherings.

The Pavilion Wing provides a quieter, self-contained space that may function equally well as a private lounge, meeting area, or retreat within the estate.

Across the house, living spaces exceed 13,000 square feet, with interiors designed to feel refined yet unforced.

Grounds & Landscape

The grounds of Fustic Estate are among its most defining features. Mature trees, winding pathways, and layered planting create a sense of seclusion and scale rarely found so close to the west coast.

At the heart of the estate lies a lagoon-style swimming pool, carved directly into a coral ravine and widely regarded as one of Messel’s most memorable design elements. Recently re-engineered, the pool is complemented by new decking and a natural rock waterfall, enhancing its integration with the surrounding landscape. A reflective garden pond, inspired by the gardens of Dartmouth, introduces a quieter counterpoint.
